Here’s a quick way to get your team motivated (Hint: it involves coffee)

I recently worked with an organisation that had completed the Gallup Q 12. 

Gallup Q 12 is an employee engagement methodology. 

It's worthwhile Googling actually. 

The results showed that this organisation was demonstrating some really good behaviors. 

Part of the Gallup process is to sit down with your one-up manager and say, "Look, here's my style. Here's my approach. This is how I like to be managed." 

And so, it's actually empowering the employees to have the conversation with their leaders to talk about, "If you want the best from me, well, here's what I want from you."

What I liked about what I saw with this specific organisation was that the leader had said to her team,


“Here's the corporate credit card. Why don't you guys go out for a coffee, have a conversation with each other, and identify what are those things that actually motivate you in the workplace.  Then when you come back, let's have some conversations individually one on one, and also as a team about, what are those things that you expected of me as a leader so that I can actually help you to have high levels of satisfaction.”

Now that is world class leadership.

If you look at the cost of that, there were eight people in the team, $5 for a cup of coffee.

That’s $40.


But the value didn't come out of the coffee.


The value came out of creating the space for her people to have a conversation in confidence about what they need from their leader.

Her people felt valued, they felt appreciated, but also too, if you look at trust, it really created this two-way dialogue that builds trust among a leader and their team.

This is a great example that aspiring high potential leaders can draw from.
